Why Birkenstocks Are a New Hampshire Summer Staple
Summer in New Hampshire doesn't really have a dress code.
It has a rhythm.
Trailhead at sunrise. The farmers' market by mid-morning. Dock time after lunch. First Friday in downtown Concord. Market Days if the timing is right.
As a small business in downtown Concord, we get to watch that rhythm play out every summer. We see locals heading to the White Mountains for the weekend, families walking through the Concord Farmers Market, visitors discovering Main Street during Market Days, and lake-goers making a quick stop before heading north.
And through all of it, one thing keeps showing up.
Birkenstocks.
Not because everyone is trying to follow a trend. Simply because they fit the way New Hampshire summers are actually lived.
Summer Happens on Your Feet
One thing we've noticed over the years at Simply Birkenstock is that most people aren't shopping for a specific event.
They're shopping for everything.
They need something that can handle a morning walk, an afternoon at the lake, dinner downtown, and a community event later that evening. New Hampshire summers don't usually happen in one place, and most people don't want to pack multiple pairs of shoes to get through the day.
That's where Birkenstocks have found such a loyal following.
Walking Trails and Weekend Adventures

New Hampshire doesn't make you choose between a quick walk and a real hike.
You can spend the morning exploring Mine Falls in Nashua, walking a rail trail in Concord, or taking an easy loop around Pawtuckaway before meeting friends for lunch downtown.
Many of these outings don't require heavy hiking boots, but they do require footwear that can handle packed dirt, gravel paths, uneven terrain, and long stretches of walking.
That's one reason we see so many Arizonas crosstown, Milano sandals every summer. Simple, comfortable, and versatile, they've become the unofficial sandal of New Hampshire weekends.
Saturday Mornings at the Farmers Market

If you've ever visited the Concord Farmers Market, you know it's rarely a quick trip.
You arrive planning to buy vegetables and maybe a loaf of bread. Before long you're chatting with vendors, running into neighbors, and spending the entire morning downtown.
The market brings together local farms, artisans, bakers, and small businesses while giving people a reason to slow down and enjoy the community around them.
It's also where we see some of our favorite summer styles. The Arizona remains a classic, but in recent years we've noticed more customers choosing styles like the Franca for a slightly more refined look. Something that transitions easily from the farmers market to brunch or an evening downtown.
First Fridays in Concord

There's something special about downtown Concord during First Friday.
Shops stay open late. Sidewalks fill with people. Local artists, musicians, and businesses bring extra energy to Main Street.
People aren't rushing anywhere. They're simply enjoying the city, discovering local businesses, and making the most of a warm New Hampshire evening and it's a great excuse to wear some of the more fashion-forward Birkenstock styles. We've seen growing interest in the Big Buckle collection and braided styles from customers looking for something a little more elevated while still keeping the comfort Birkenstock is known for.
Lake Weekends Are a New Hampshire Tradition

Once summer arrives, weekends often revolve around the water.
Whether it's Winnipesaukee, Squam, Sunapee, or one of New Hampshire's countless smaller lakes, people spend their days moving between docks, boats, beaches, gravel paths, and backyard cookouts.
Footwear needs to keep up. You want something that's easy to slip on, comfortable enough for a full day outside, and practical for the constant back-and-forth that lake life brings. That's why sandals remain a staple of New Hampshire summers year after year.
Market Days: Concord’s Biggest Summer Celebration

If there’s one event that captures the spirit of a New Hampshire summer, it’s Market Days.
This year marks the 52nd annual Market Days Festival, running June 25–27, 2026, right through the heart of downtown Concord. For three days, Main Street fills with more than 150 vendors, three stages of live music, and crowds that typically top 50,000 people, moving between food, shopping, and entertainment from 10am to 10pm each day.
At Simply Birkenstock, we’re right in the middle of it. Our store stays open during Market Days, and we’ve been part of this downtown tradition for more than 15 years. We also set up a booth right outside our store, which makes the weekend even more connected to the street-level energy of the festival.
As a downtown business, it’s one of our favorite weekends of the year. People cover miles without even realizing it, browsing vendor booths, grabbing food, listening to live music, and reconnecting with friends and neighbors. It’s also one of the clearest reminders of why comfort matters here.
Anyone who’s been to Market Days knows it: comfortable footwear can be the difference between calling it a day early or staying until the final performance. That’s why we consistently see Arizona, Franca, and Boston styles throughout the festival.
Even Rainy Days Have Their Birkenstock

Of course, this is New Hampshire. Sometimes the weather has other plans.
For rainy weekends, muddy gardens, and unpredictable forecasts, the Super Birki, EVA collection has quietly developed a loyal following among customers who spend a lot of time outdoors, because New Hampshire residents tend to embrace the weather rather than wait for perfect conditions.
More Than a Summer Sandal
The reason Birkenstocks have become such a fixture in New Hampshire isn't really about footwear.
It's about lifestyle.
It's about trailheads, farmers' markets, lake weekends, First Fridays, and Market Days. It's about supporting local businesses, spending time outdoors, and making the most of a season that never seems long enough.
At Simply Birkenstock, we're fortunate to be part of those traditions. Every summer, we get to help customers prepare for their next adventure, whether that's a walk through downtown Concord or a weekend at the lake.
And if there's one thing we've learned, it's this:
New Hampshire summers move fast. The best footwear is the kind that lets you enjoy every step along the way.
